The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on the things that occurred during the past year. It is also a great time to set new goals for yourself. No one is perfect, and there are always things that we can change that will improve our overall health in general and our physical health in particular, as well as our interactions with others in our personal and professional lives.
Ready to make 2019 the best year you have ever had? Here are some simple things you can do to increase your odds of making this year a memorable one:
1) Evaluate The Past Year
Going over the high and low points of the past year is a good way to narrow down the things you need to work on. What were the best things that happened during the past year? Did one of your habits facilitate it? Go over the low points as well and figure out what led to them and how you can prevent them in the future.
2) Set Goals
Setting clear goals ensures that you are evolving constantly as a person. Failing to do so can lead to stagnation. People who have clear goals also tend to be happier than those who don’t. There’s meaning to your everyday routine. When you get up in the morning, there are clearly defined tasks that you plan to complete. Have short-term goals for each quarter and a major goal you plan to attain by the end of the year.
3) Don’t Neglect Your Mental Health
Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Always remember to take care of yourself. Come up with constructive ways to deal with the negative emotions life sometimes throws your way. Never let them get the best of you.
Find activities that help you de-stress like martial arts classes and many other sports. Breaking a sweat is great for your brain since it causes a release of dopamine, which elevates your mood and makes you feel good. Physical activities like martial arts also give you a productive way to vent pent-up frustration.
Being aware of the things in your life you should be grateful for helps to keep you in the right frame of mind. There isn’t a single person in the world who does not have many things for which he or she should be grateful.
Are you able to walk around without any assistance? There are many people who are not able to do so. Think deeply, and you should be able to come up with a long list of things in your life for which you should be grateful. Learn to focus more on these things and less on the things that you do not have. Little mindset changes like this can improve your happiness levels and quality of life drastically.
4) Take Care Of Your Body
Life is a lot easier when you are in great physical condition. It goes way beyond looking good. Your physical condition affects your quality of life greatly. That might not be obvious to you if you are in relatively decent shape, but people who are seriously overweight are very familiar with this truth.
Not everyone can use the stairs to reach the 10th floor of a building or go hiking through some amazing landscapes. Keeping your body in good condition is what makes it possible to do these things.
Make improving your physical health a priority in 2019 and you will reap immediate results. You will feel more confident about your appearance, have lower stress levels, sleep better and be less likely to deal with health issues. All these things will have a significant effect on your personal and professional interactions.
5) Push Yourself
Never be afraid to push yourself and try new things. The worst that can happen is that you’ll fail, and that is not anywhere as bad as many people think. Failure is simply an opportunity to learn what doesn’t work and gain some experience. People with the right attitude often end up going on to do big things after failing many times.
For example, don’t be afraid to spar with the person who is clearly the best student in your Muay Thai class simply because you don’t want to lose a sparring session. That type of thinking only stunts your growth. Always push yourself and take on big challenges.
6) Help Others
Dedicating some of your time to helping others is great for your well-being. It helps to keep you focused on the important things in life, which makes it easier for you to work toward your goals. Make it a mission to spend more time in service of others in 2019.
7) Get Lots Of Sleep
While you might have heard many “self-help gurus” talk about only sleeping two hours each night to accomplish their goals, try not to get sucked into any of that. While sleeping less gives you more time to get things done, not getting enough sleep makes you less productive.
Your brain isn’t as sharp when you are not well rested and the same holds true for your body. In order to be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be, make sure you get enough sleep each night. Doctors recommend eight hours of sleep for the average person.
8) Do Something You Have Never Done Before
The start of a new year is a good time to set a goal to do something you have never done in the past. Use this as an incentive to treat yourself toward the end of the year as you accomplish your goals. It can be a trip to a place you’ve been before or some fun activity you have never done before. It will help you to relax and recharge for the rest of the year. It will also enrich your life.
