Who would have ever imagined that a multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion would one day become an MMA World Champion? In the latest episode of the “I AM A WARRIOR” Series, ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke talks about his journey from a little boy born into extreme poverty and how he became an international MMA Superstar on top of the world.
Certainly not Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke. But then, if you’ve been fighting for as long as he has, you’d understand why. Born to a poor family in Trang, Thailand, Dejdamrong’s parents had always struggled to make ends meet, leaving Dejdamrong with his grandparents for several months at a time. To help his parents, Dejdamrong began to train Muay Thai at the tender age of 9. Of course, it helped that he was deeply passionate about the art.
Although his father shared his passion, his mother was strongly opposed to her son taking up Muay Thai. “She thought I would get hurt,” explained Dejdamrong. Unfortunately, his mother was right. Living the life of a Muay Thai fighter was not the easiest nor the most pleasant way to grow up. “Training was tough and grueling, I would often break down in tears, ” shared Dejdamrong. But it was through these hardships that Dejdamrong learned the meaning of perseverance and determination, lessons that would stay with him to this very day.
A year later, at the age of 10, Dejdamrong won his first Muay Thai fight and would go on to win over 400 more throughout his professional career. He would later on become a 3-time Lumpinee World Champion, Muay Thai World Champion, Thailand National Champion, Omnoi Champion, Shell Rimula Tournament Champion and Channel 3 Muay Thai Champion.
At 30 years of age, you would expect someone as highly revered as Dejdamrong to completely retire from fighting, but to everyone’s surprise, he just kept on going. In the next 5 years, he would move to Japan to teach Muay Thai, but also fight Muay Thai. He would win 9 of his fights.
Dejdamrong’s passion for fighting and competing never waned. After moving to Evolve MMA in Singapore, he found himself wanting another challenge. “I watched my Brazilian friends competing in MMA for ONE Championship,” says Dejdamrong, “I thought to myself, I could do that — but I need to start training BJJ first.”
Needless to say, the rest is history. Dejdamrong went on to train MMA with Asia’s most decorated MMA team, the Evolve Fight Team and became a legend in his own right. Today, Dejdamrong is the first Thai to ever win a world title in mixed martial arts. And against everyone’s expectations, he has won 2 out of his 5 fights by way of submission — not bad for a multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion.
Above all, Dejdamrong is proud to have set an example for Thai youth to start training MMA for personal development, self-defense and to compete. He is also finally able to give his family a much better life, giving his parents and his own family their own homes and even their very own car.
Dejdamrong is truly a great example of what all martial artists should aspire to be. He has proven that through hard work, perseverance and with an unbreakable warrior spirit, anything is truly possible. Luckily, we will all be able to witness history as he gets set to defend his title for the 1st time on November 13 at ONE Championship: Pride of Lions in Singapore; we will all be able to witness this incredible martial artist’s skills for ourselves.
