Most people know Eddie “The Magician” Ng primarily as a member of the prestigious Evolve Fight Team, Asia’s most decorated professional fight team. We’ve seen him competing inside the ONE Fighting Championship cage, overseeing a grueling WarriorFit class, and leading the Little Samurai Muay Thai program at Evolve MMA. Eddie is also a health and fitness fanatic. As the person-in-charge of the Warrior Nutrition Program at Evolve MMA, Eddie is the ultimate source for anything health or nutrition related.
Prior to finding martial arts, Eddie decided that “dirty bulking” was the quickest way to put on muscle mass and improve strength. Unfortunately, “dirty bulking” had a huge negative impact on Eddie’s training. He often felt sluggish and weak, unable to push through a training session. Instead of purely gaining muscle, Eddie started gaining fat as well. From a starting weight of 67 kilos, Eddie reached a high of 93 kilos. It was then that he decided that he needed to start doing something different. “I started eating clean 12 years ago, around the same time I started martial arts,” he explained.
Eddie quickly discovered that eating clean had a direct impact on his training. “I started to feel a lot better during my training sessions,” said Eddie. “I had more energy and I felt stronger than I ever was.” Today, at 78 kilos, Eddie feels like he is in the best shape of his life. Eating clean has improved his life in all areas. Eddie says, “When you eat clean, your body digests food more easily. Your body has the energy and capacity to work on other things, so you can focus better on your training sessions and optimize them.”
Today, Eddie shares one of his secret shake recipes with our readers. “It’s an easy way to get in your healthy fats, dark leafy greens, and fruits for the day,” says Eddie. “If you’re one of those people who doesn’t really like eating fruits and vegetables, this is an easy way to get them into your diet.”
Eddie’s “Green Magic” Shake
Kale – 2 or 3 big leaves, torn
Spinach – 2 handfuls
Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
Chia seeds – 1-2 tbsp
Flax seeds – 1-2 tbsp
Frozen berries – 1 palmful
Almond butter – 1 tbsp
500 ml of water
Dump all of the ingredients into a high powered blender.
Pulse on high for around 1 minute and 30 seconds until smooth.
According to Eddie, the shake is completely customizable depending on your individual fitness goals. For example, if you want to increase your muscle mass, you can add more carbohydrates like oats, bananas, apples, or even protein powder.
