Talk to any Muay Thai fighter, and you’ll find out that quite a number of them strive to eventually land a knockout shot in the ring. After all, it is one of the best ways to end the fight and emerge victorious.
Getting hit in the head seems like the fastest way to secure a quick knockout. Well, the head is a key place with several vital KO spots… But did you know that a well executed liver shot can be just as damaging? Besides experiencing loss of breath and a sudden sharp pain, a liver shot could cause you to lose consciousness if the sudden trauma is severe enough. That’s why we believe that liver shots have what it takes to make your opponent collapse on the canvas at the snap of a finger.
Want to find out more about liver strikes? Then read on, and watch the following videos closely. Today, Evolve Daily shares Liver KO Combinations That Will Elevate Your Game:
1) 5 Basic Liver Shot KO Combinations
When executed with flawless technique and accuracy, a punch to the liver can cause great damage to your opponent – and possibly even end in a KO. Of course, your liver shot has to be set up properly so as to have a higher chance of landing on your target.
In this video, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao demonstrates 5 basic liver shot KO combinations which you can drill with a heavy bag or a partner. Once you nail down the techniques and get familiar with these combinations, you may proceed to try them during sparring sessions or even in the ring!
Tip: As you execute your liver shot (the hook to body), ensure that you punch with a slight upward angle – so it becomes a shovel punch, which is basically a hybrid between the hook and uppercut.
2) 3 Liver Kick KO Combinations
Apart from throwing punches, another way to effectively hit the liver is to throw a liver kick. Like all other techniques, it helps to stay relaxed as you throw your liver kick. This is because when you fail to breathe and relax, you’ll tense up your body and as a result, your movement will be restricted. When you’re relaxed, you can stay light on your feet, execute your combinations with fluidity, and land that liver kick with explosive power.
In this video, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao shows 3 liver kick KO combinations. If you watch closely, you’ll notice that he included a fake in the first combination. Fakes are a great way to distract and confuse your opponent for a brief moment so that you can land your intended strike. For more about fakes, read our article here.
Tip: When drilling with a partner or sparring, don’t feel compelled to execute these combinations at full power and speed. Instead, focus on getting your technique on point, as well as understanding distance and timing.
3) 3 Liver Knee KO Combinations
Another devastating strike that can potentially earn you that elusive knockout is the liver knee. In order to properly execute a liver knee, you have to be sure that you’re able to aim for (and reach) the liver – which is located on the right side of the body at the lower rib area. To access this area more effectively, it helps to hold your opponent in a tight clinch so as to get better control and have a higher chance of hitting your target.
In this video, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao demonstrates 3 liver knee KO combinations. As mentioned earlier, it helps to have control over your opponent by locking him/her in a clinch. This is exactly what Sam-A does in all 3 combinations, before he executes the liver knee. Also, notice how he stays light on his feet the whole time, so that he can move around more freely, and reach his target more easily.
Tip: In order to successfully land your liver knee from inside the clinch, you need to have good balance as well as arm control so as to make it harder for your opponent to escape.
So tell us, are you going to drill these liver KO combinations?
