+ More on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Over the last several decades, the Gracie Family invented, developed, and honed the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after the learnings from Mitsuyo Maeda, a renowned Judo expert from Japan, in the early 1900s. The essence of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is to utilize technique and leverage in order to achieve a superior position before executing a submission (a joint lock or a choke hold). The 4 basic positions in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are side control, full mount, back mount, and guard. There are variations and derivations for each position too. The main submissions in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consist of joint locks (armbars, kneebars, shoulder locks, wrist locks, etc) and chokes (rear naked chokes, front chokes, side chokes, etc). Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu originally rose to prominence after its methodologies were showcased in real competition against other martial arts in the UFC. Since the early 1900s, the Gracie Family has long adopted a real-life approach to martial arts in that every technique must work in live situations.

Some legendary champions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu include Helio Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Royce Gracie, Renzo Gracie, and Royler Gracie. Some modern day heroes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu include Roger Gracie, Alexandre Ribeiro, Marcelo Garcia, Andre Galvao, Rafael and Guilherme Mendes.
