People often promote the physical benefits of boxing training. While it’s certainly true that spendings time training in the boxing gym can get you in the best shape of your life, there is no doubt that it can also improve your mental capacity, particularly the way you think.
Having the right mindset is so important, not just in the boxing ring, but also in our everyday lives. What kind of thought process we adopt in handling our tasks can prove to be the difference between success and failure in anything we do.
In this sense, boxing trains our minds to operate in a certain way that it will positively affect how we live our lives.
Furthermore, the right mindset dictates how we carry ourselves as individuals. And this is so important in all aspects of our existence, for how we behave as humans is key to being good members of society.
If you’re looking at strengthening your mind and spirit, alongside getting yourself into supreme physical condition, taking up boxing should be a major consideration. Let’s take a look at how you can develop a world champion mindset through boxing training.
Today, Evolve Daily shares four ways your mind changes when you learn boxing.
1) Become more resilient
Throughout your training, you’ll be in a constant battle with adversity. Whether it’s pushing yourself mentally and physically to complete a training session, or practicing in the boxing gym until the lights shut off just to master your technique, you’ll learn to handle problems like a true fighter — you will never give up.
In fact, the very moment you step into your first boxing lesson, you’ll be faced with challenges, both small and large. The way you maneuver around these obstacles will change as you progress in your training. The more adversity you face, the better you get at handling any obstacle, both physical and mental.
This is how boxing trains you to be more resilient.
Getting knocked down in the ring is the same as getting knocked down in life. It doesn’t matter how many times it happens, as long as you muster the strength to pick yourself up and keep fighting. In this sense, there is no problem too big to overcome.
2) Learn to be process-oriented
Like all martial arts disciplines, boxing training teaches you to trust and enjoy the process as much as the destination. Yes, the end results are very important, but so is the journey of getting there. The lessons you learn along the way are key to your personal growth.
While you’ll be able to see and set your goals definitively, you’ll also discover exactly what you need to do to achieve them.
To master your jab, you have to practice it every day, paying close attention to how you execute. To get better at slipping punches, you have to train your lower body and your core. To improve your stamina in the ring, you have to get up at five in the morning every day to run. These are all challenging tasks, but you get up and do them anyways, because you know the results will come with hard work.
This type of lesson can be applied in real life when facing real-world trials and adversities. Through boxing training, you learn to trust the process.
3) Discover your true capabilities
When we first start training, our confidence may be very low. We don’t know if we have the willpower or strength to complete any of the tasks, and some obstacles may seem impossible to overcome. But we put in the work, and eventually, we get the job done.
Boxing training teaches people that there is no limit to what we can achieve if we put our heart and soul into something. Through countless hours spent honing our skills in the boxing gym, the sheer amount of sweat we’ve poured into reaching our goals, we discover what we can do and achieve. We set the bar higher for ourselves and reach for more.
In a sense, we discover what we are truly capable of through training, identifying our physical and mental limits. More importantly, we learn how to shatter those limits. The same is also applied outside of the ring.
We gain unshakeable confidence in our abilities, and that’s a very powerful thing.
4) Embrace failure
Last but certainly not least, boxing training will teach you to embrace failure for what it truly is — life’s greatest lesson, and a path to excellence. Experience is often the best teacher, and we don’t really fail if we learn the embedded lessons every experience contains.
In the boxing ring, the same as in real life, failure is inevitable. We all make mistakes.
As a boxer, you’ll make mistakes during training. You’ll succumb to complacency. You’ll undertrain. You’ll overtrain. Your reaction time will be too slow and you’ll get hit in the face. You’ll move yourself into a corner and get trapped.
But the more you fail, the more you should also learn.
Eventually, you’ll learn to value hard work. You’ll put in enough hours in the gym, and get enough rest. You’ll be physically and mentally quick enough to react at just the right time to move your head and avoid a punch. You’ll get cornered, but then you’ll know how to get out of it.
Without failure, we won’t know the true meaning of success. This is how boxing teaches us to embrace our mistakes and treat each opportunity as a chance to learn.
So if you’re not only looking to get into the beset shape of life but also to strengthen your mind, give boxing a go!
