In our journey to become the best martial artist we could be, we become so focused on training that we forget the other essential component for our success. Yes, we often disregard our diet. Time and again, we’ve been reminded how important our diet is and yet it is so easy get sidetracked and give in to our cravings.
Dieting doesn’t have to be so difficult. In fact, keeping it simple is the only way to make it sustainable and easily adaptable into our lifestyle. Curious?
Today, Evolve Daily shares 7 Simple Strategies You Can Use To Lose Weight:
1) Shop wisely
Next time you head to the supermarket, make sure you circle the perimeter of the store before heading to a specific aisle. All the fresh produce, meat, and seafood can be found around the edges of the store, while the inner aisles have all the packaged and processed foods. Don’t scrimp on the healthy produce and lean proteins! Although your grocery bill might be higher, you’ll be less inclined to eat out and more likely to eat healthier at home.
2) Out of sight, out of mind
Take the time to rearrange your pantry and your fridge. Stock up on healthy produce, grains and proteins, and keep them in eyesight. Toss the junk or keep them hidden in the back, so you won’t be tempted to cave in. We know that just because you’ve put away the potato chips doesn’t mean you’ll forget about it, but it helps. The more healthy items you have in front of you, the more likely you’ll be to reach for them first!
3) Get sneaky
When there’s a will, there’s a way. If you aren’t ready to go hardcore with your diet, find a way to sneak vegetables and good carbs into your regular meals! By increasing your vegetable consumption, you’ll protect yourself against obesity and increase your fiber levels. Once you get used to it, you’ll find that isn’t too difficult to do. Add veggies to your breakfast omelette, pasta dishes, and even baked goods — soon, you won’t even notice that they’re there!
4) Stay away from simple carbs
A simple rule to follow when trying to lose weight is: stay away from anything white. White bread, pastries, refined sugars — they’re all simple carbs that provide energy but lack the nutrients complex carbohydrates provide. Simple carbs also spike up your insulin levels, making you hungrier, faster. Opt for whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa or whole-wheat pasta. Not only are they filled with vitamins and minerals, they’re rich in fiber too!
5) Watch what you add
Although it might be tempting, you should do all you can to stop yourself from reaching out for the salt shaker. Adding salt to your food increases your risk for cardiovascular disease as well as obesity. If you still think your food is too bland, opt for low sodium chicken or beef stock. For an extra kick, you could even try adding spice to your food!
6) Spice up your food
If you’re a spicy food fiend, you’re in luck! One of the simplest ways to boost your metabolism and get rid of cravings is to add cayenne pepper to your food. Studies show that cayenne pepper stimulates digestion and muscle movement in your intestines, helping in absorption of food nutrients too.
7) Switch it up
Making simple switches is one of the easiest ways to make healthy eating part of your lifestyle. To cut calories, simply substitute your regular food choices with healthier alternatives: whole fruit for fruit juice, Greek yoghurt for sour cream, carrot sticks for potato chips — it really doesn’t have to be all that difficult!
Remember, to get the most out of your martial arts training, you need to eat well. All that hard work could go down the drain if you aren’t careful — and you wouldn’t want that to happen! So go on, make an effort to lead a healthier lifestyle. Before you know it, you wouldn’t want it any other way!
