To All The Heartbroken Men: This Is Why Martial Arts Is Better Than A Girlfriend

** Disclaimer: Evolve Daily is not perpetuating female stereotypes. It is simply commiserating with men with extremely broken hearts. **

We’ve all had our hearts ripped into pieces by our so-called girlfriends. After proclaiming our undying love for them, for some reason or another, they’ve found a way to forget everything we’ve done for the relationship to work. All of a sudden, we’re the bad guys, and they won’t tell us why. Or the reason why is just so damn unclear because they won’t stop changing their minds.

Instead of slamming our heads onto the closest hard surface as we try to figure out the complex minds/feelings of the female species, perhaps we should head to the closest martial arts gym. The gym could become our new sanctuary, a place to forgive and forget, and let go. If you’re feeling down, here’s 7 Reasons Why Martial Arts Is Better Than A Girlfriend:

1) Martial arts won’t break your heart

Even after the toughest sparring sessions with your nemesis, with him tapping you out over and over again, destroying your ego and your faith in your technique, martial arts will leave your heart intact. You can walk away from your spar and feel horrible for the next few minutes and feel better after the next spar. A broken heart wouldn’t recover as easily though – anyone can attest to that.

2) Martial arts won’t make you gain weight

Yeah, you know all that extra weight you put on because your girlfriend wants to try a new restaurant or because she needs to have chocolate cake/ice cream for dessert? Well, you can say goodbye to all that unwanted, excess (emotional) baggage/weight and say finally hello to those six-pack abs you’ve always wanted. All those intense training sessions that need proper fuelling, and your newfound focus on becoming the best martial artist you could be means you’ll actually eat clean and not have to cut too much weight come competition season.

3) Martial arts will always be there for you

It doesn’t matter if you’re right and she’s wrong, or if she’s right or you’re wrong. Martial arts doesn’t take sides, it will always be there when you need it to be. All you need to do is step into the gym, put on your gi/gloves, your game face and have an open mind for learning new techniques. There will always be someone willing to train with you or spar with you, despite your faults and bad habits. And if no one wants to partner up with you, there’s always the instructor.

4) Martial arts will always be honest

If you’re doing a technique the wrong way, you’d know right away. Your training partner would either tap you out/knock you out or find a way to put you in a bad position. If you haven’t been training properly, you’ll be gassed out during sparring. Unlike all those times when you’re guessing whether your girlfriend actually is mad or not, martial arts is as honest as an armbar from mount. If you do it properly, it will work.

5) Martial arts will always make you happy

Tight guard passing is an essential skill in BJJ.

You know that awesome feeling you get after a great training session? That’s because of endorphins, those chemicals your body releases after working out. The endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain, giving you that happy feeling after training. Why succumb to the possibility of getting hurt emotionally when you could be happy all the time?

6) Martial arts won’t get mad at you

BJJ World Champion and ONE Superstar Alex Silva trains hard at the Evolve MMA Fighters Program.

With martial arts, you don’t have to tiptoe around someone else’s feelings. All you have to do is show up and train. The only thing you have to worry about is how well you do in sparring and what you’ll eat after training.

7) Martial arts won’t get mad at you for doing martial arts

Nothing beats the friendships forged through martial arts!

Remember all those times your girlfriend got mad at you because you wanted to train instead of hang out? Or all those times you missed training sessions because your girlfriend wanted to spend quality time together? Martial arts won’t judge you for choosing to do martial arts over anything else. In fact, martial arts wants you to do martial arts. The more martial arts you do, the better you’ll be at martial arts. And that’s a fact!

Although having a girlfriend certainly has its perks, not having one doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. Instead of feeling lonely while looking/stalking at your ex’s Instagram account, head to the gym and train your heart out!
