If you think that it’s alright to treat yourself to your favorite burger or dig into that tub of chocolate ice cream, think again. No matter how hard you might have worked out in the gym, there’s no excuse or reason to binge on unhealthy food after training. Yes, even if you feel like you’ve earned it! After all, you wouldn’t want to consume the calories you just burned.
When you feel tempted to eat something unhealthy after your workout, it helps to remember how much effort you put into working out and think about your goals. We’re pretty sure you don’t want to undo your hard work, right? As what you eat matters, it’s always best to opt for a well-balanced, nutritious meal so that your body can reap the benefits and you can recover more effectively.
2) Skipping your post-workout meal
Those who want to lose weight might assume that skipping meals can accelerate the process. But this isn’t true at all. In fact, skipping meals could potentially cause you to gain weight as your body will go into starvation mode and hold on to more fat in the process. Besides that, you will also mess up your metabolism!
If you intend to build muscle, then depriving your body of nutritious food is definitely not the way to go. This is because your body needs fuel to nourish your muscles and keep you strong. Also, having more muscles can actually play a part in helping you lose weight – because your body will burn more calories at rest! So why not give your body what it deserves after a workout: a healthy meal!
3) Having celebratory post-workout drinks
Of course, it’s worth celebrating your new BJJ stripe, or the fact that you broke a personal record in the gym. The thing is, you might want to think twice if you’re celebrating with alcohol. This is because alcohol is extremely dehydrating and actually causes you to sweat more as your body attempts to eliminate the toxins. So if you just had an intense workout and perspired a lot, the last thing you want to do is get dehydrated right after leaving the gym!
Apart from that, alcohol is rich in calories and sugar. Hence, if you drink those cocktails after training, it comes as no surprise that you could be wasting your workout and paying the price in extra pounds.
4) Drinking sugary sports drinks
Do you have the habit of refueling with sports drinks after every workout? Marketing and ads might make them seem like the best thing to reach out for after you hit the gym – but the keyword here is “seem”. For starters, sports drinks contain as much as 60% of the sugar content in soda. What’s more, these sports drinks also contain high amounts of artificial flavors, coloring, and sodium. Rehydrate with calorie-free water or replenish your electrolytes with coconut water instead. Trust us, your body will thank you for that.
5) Thinking it’s okay to be lazy the rest of the week
Like how you think you deserve that high-calorie meal (see #1), you might also think that you’ve earned the right to slack off when it comes to exercising. But this isn’t the right mindset to have – especially if you have weight loss goals! If you truly wish to see results and make progress, then you have to stay committed and always give 100% in the gym.
It’s easy to fall off the wagon from time to time, but when this happens, do not get demoralized or beat yourself up. Instead, take your next workout as an opportunity to make things right again – be it in the gym, or what you do after your workout. Now go forth and make every workout count!
