Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Best Workout You’ve Yet To Try

The world is filled with feel-good stories about how people have transformed their bodies – and their lives – by starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

To anyone who has ever practiced BJJ before, this is unsurprising.

Each BJJ class is packed with various techniques, exercises, and even some ‘live’ drilling and sparring. All of that might sound like an intense workout. It might also seem too difficult. However, with the support of world-class instructors and the support of experienced practitioners around you, not only will you begin shredding weight, but you will become more confident and improve in many other ways as well.

See, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was not invented as a way to lose weight. Shredding kilograms is not even a priority when you are in class. It is just not about that. Instead, losing weight is a byproduct of what is a fun-filled martial art that will help you improve your physical appearance, ability, and your overall health.

Today, Evolve Daily brings you “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Best Workout You’ve Yet To Try”.

You WILL Shred Weight!

With confidence, we can say that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a brilliant way to lose weight.

It is not uncommon for overweight students to lose 10-20kg in their first six months of training BJJ.

The best part about BJJ is that you can do it in moderation. You are not thrown into anything too extreme or intense – ever. It is an entirely different activity and experience to cardiovascular exercises such as running, riding a bike, or swimming.

You should not begin with 100% intensity and never look back. It is not recommended, by any means. Instead, you should start at a pace that is comfortable to you and pick up the level of intensity as your body acclimatizes.

So, what type of physical activity should you expect in a BJJ class?

What Type Of Exercise Can I Expect?

Here’s what you can typically expect from a BJJ class in Singapore or anywhere around the world:

1) A Warm-Up

Running is a form of warm-up before the BJJ class at Evolve MMA Far East Square.

Depending on the school, the warm-up is sometimes the most ‘intense’ cardio you will experience in a BJJ class. That might sound strange at first, but the instructor might want to begin with simple bodyweight exercises such as jumping jacks, running around the mats, or other gymnastic-style exercises.

Don’t be concerned, though, if these exercises are too challenging. You can participate at your desired level of intensity. Remember, you still have an entire class ahead!

2) Technique

Specific techniques during that class will be taught after warm-ups.

Next, your instructor will likely demonstrate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques.

It might be the basics of a particular position or an instruction of how to properly execute a submission.

Then, you will be partnered up with someone of similar skill and size so that you can practice the technique. Here’s the thing – in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, even the most simple of techniques, when exercised correctly, can be an excellent workout.

You will likely practice technique for the majority of your class.

3) Rolling

After the technique was taught, students will be able to learn and apply them when rolling with their partner.

Now, this is when the weight really starts to fall off.

Rolling is a form of ‘sparring‘ in which you can practice techniques in a live environment.

At the back-end of a class in BJJ, you can partner up with another similarly skilled and sized student and practice all of the aspects you have learned in class. This is what is referred to as a ‘live’ situation, so you will be actively working on using the techniques that you have learned.

That might sound a little extreme to a beginner, but it is really not. Your instructor and partner will guide you along the way.

But the reason why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is good for weight loss is sometimes not even what happens in the class itself.

It’s What Happens When You’re NOT On The Mats

BJJ has a tremendous effect on your lifestyle.

That is not to say that the first time you step onto the mats is going to change your life forever, but it might.

If you enjoy training BJJ and are already experiencing the weight loss benefits while in class, that is just the first step of what could become a dramatic transformation. It might take you a week or two to become ingrained in BJJ. When you do, you will begin to look for ways to improve. One of those ways, of course, is to improve your physical ability.

So, more often than not, BJJ has a significant effect on the way people approach their diet and lifestyle.

If you want to get more from your body, you need to give it the correct fuel. You will begin to reconsider those poor food choices and start to appreciate the healthier options.

Wanting to be as good as you can be at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will lead you to improve your overall lifestyle.

However, what’s to say that you will care this much about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is Fun, And That Is Why It Is A Great Way To Lose Weight

Yes, anyone can go for a run outside every morning, and that will certainly help you lose weight, but is it enjoyable?

To some people it is, but to most people it is uninspiring.

By starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you will begin on a journey surrounded by new people and a community of students who are all looking to achieve similar outcomes.

The community feeling will keep you coming back, as well as the desire to improve your ability as a martial artist. You do not need expensive tools or equipment to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you only need a uniform and the ability to get yourself to class.

You will not only improve your body, but you will test your mind as well. The classes will develop your critical thinking, social and professional networks, and you will begin to feel more confident. You will also learn an essential form of self-defense.

If you are overweight and have been considering ways to get yourself into shape, look no further.

The best time to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is now.
