Follow These 5 Steps to Lead a Healthier Life

Now that we’re already almost 4 months into 2016, we can’t help but go back to our New Year resolution list and check our progress.

What about you?

Are you successfully keeping to what you set out to do? Perhaps it’s making healthier food choices, or working out at the gym twice a week. If that’s the case, then you’re definitely on the right track to making this your healthiest year – so keep it up!

However, if you realize that you’ve failed to keep to those resolutions, don’t sweat it. All of us at Evolve Daily have been there before, and we totally understand that feeling. But here’s the thing: every new day comes with a new chance to pick yourself up and try again! So don’t be too disheartened, and more importantly, don’t give up.

Ready to get back on track to becoming your healthiest self? Today, Evolve Daily shares 5 Steps to Lead a Healthier Life:

1) Understand that you have the power to change your life

Another awesome day of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at EVOLVE with BJJ World Champion and ONE Superstar Bruno Pucci!

First and foremost, you need to realize that everything – including being healthy – starts from the inside. That means how you perceive yourself and your life, as well as your thoughts, matter.

When you choose to focus and harp on the negative things, you’ll end up getting blinded to all the good that’s around you. Once this happens, you would have fallen into a trap that you’ve set for yourself – or worse, end up blaming everything else when the real problem actually lies with your negative mindset.

We believe that the first step to getting healthy is to understand that you have the power to choose your path, and are in control of making your life an awesome one. So the next time you feel beaten by life, remember that you’re the one who’s in control – and do your best to fill your mind with positive thoughts. When you learn to embrace this power, you’ll become a master of your fate and achieve great things in life.

2) Start replacing those bad habits with good ones

In life, we’re all guilty of picking up bad habits – be it smoking, mindless snacking, overspending or binge drinking. Unfortunately, we sometimes let these habits control us, and as a result, feel powerless. But it doesn’t have to be this way (see the above point, and remember: it’s all mind over matter!)

So stop making excuses and break your bad habits by picking up good ones. If you want to stop mindless snacking, then eat a few small nutritious meals a day. If you want to stop smoking, set realistic goals and slowly cut down on your cigarettes till you eventually stop. If you want to stop overspending, set budgets and keep to them. If you want to stop binge drinking, then attend less happy hour gatherings or suggest doing something else with your friends – whether it’s watching a movie or night cycling.

It might be difficult at the start, but it helps to let your close friends or family know about this. This is because they can be your support system and motivate you to keep going when you feel like giving up. After all, why throw in the towel when you’ve made it so far?

3) Engage in exercises that you enjoy

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: regular physical activity is the key to keeping yourself healthy. The thing is, when you force yourself to exercise and do something you dislike, there’s a high chance that you’d eventually lose your motivation and stop working out altogether.

So get out and try all kinds of exercises – be it Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, yoga, boxing, or strength training. Who knows, you might fall in love with something along the way! When this happens, you wouldn’t feel like working out is a burden, and chances are, you’d stick to it. Besides keeping you physically fit, you’ll also notice that you’re much happier. After all, you’re doing what you love, and it happens to bring you a host of benefits!

4) Establish a healthy sleep cycle and meal plan

A balanced diet can protect your body from various diseases.

Apart from engaging in regular physical activity, it’s crucial for you to get enough sleep and munch on nutritious food! This is because you can’t out-exercise an unhealthy diet, and if you don’t get enough rest, you can’t perform well at the gym.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy, balanced diet, you need to ensure that you’re having lots of vegetables and fruits, as well as protein-rich food. Also, remember to stay hydrated and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, so that your body can function well!

Besides that, you should make sure you catch at least 7 to 8 hours of quality ZZZ’s – not just so you’d feel alert the next day, but also because getting enough sleep plays a part in maintaining a healthy body weight and improving your memory, among other benefits!

5) Learn to love, understand, and respect yourself

It's always important to stretch properly before an intense workout.

When you learn to treat yourself the way you (and your body) deserve to be treated, you’d automatically make healthier choices. You’ll also be able to listen your body and give it enough rest and proper food. After all, why treat your body like a trash can and deprive yourself of important nutrients?

Once you decide that you’re important enough, you’ll be more positive and your confidence would grow. The best part is that you’d eventually go on to believe in yourself. When this happens, you’ll be unstoppable when it comes to achieving everything you set out to do (yes, this includes leading a healthier life!)

Now that you know what you can do to become your healthiest self, go forth and get into the best shape of your life!
