Beginner Training Tips For Those New To The Boxing Gym

Many people have taken up boxing as a form of training, to help improve their health and fitness. If you’re considering stepping inside the ring to lose weight and just adopt an overall better lifestyle, you’ve made the right choice.

Boxing is an incredible martial art for fitness. But it can also be daunting for people who have never experienced training in martial arts prior. Like many beginners, you probably don’t even know where to start.

Heading into your first session, there are a few things you should consider to help you along the way. These tips will help acclimate you to the specific training environment you will face in the boxing gym. Of course, it’s always best to come well prepared.

1) Be punctual

Punctuality should be the norm in everything, but especially if you want to have a good experience in the boxing gym. No instructor appreciates a student who arrives late for a class, so always strive to show up a few minutes early. It’s the first sign of respect. Also, being punctual shows commitment.

Being late will cause you to miss those precious few minutes of training, where you could have learned something valuable. More importantly, tardiness interrupts the flow of every session, not to mention that it’s terribly distracting.

There will be times you are late. You can never achieve perfect attendance, that’s understandable. But try not to make it a habit.

 

2) Be open to learning

Forget everything you know about boxing. Treat this as your first experience with the sport. That being said, you should be open to learning as much as you can. Trust in your instructors because they have years of experience in the sport, and can get you up to speed pretty quickly.

You should also expect to be tested both physically and mentally. Boxing is a tremendous physical and mental workout, and will help you discover the limits of what you are capable of.

Boxing, as a martial arts discipline, is immensely intricate. There are so many things to learn. Some practice the sport their entire lives and are still learning something new every day.

 

3) Show respect

Respect is an important value of martial arts.

Respect is one of the biggest words in martial arts, and it’s the same in the boxing gym. In general, you want to treat others the way you want to be treated. Being respectful to not only your coaches, but also your teammates is the way to go.

As always, leave your ego at the door. Don’t go into the gym acting like you know everything. Even the most advanced practitioners are always learning something new, despite having trained for years.

It’s easy to become too overconfident in your skills when you start to get better. Don’t fall into that trap.

4) Get ample sleep the day before

Again, another basic necessity, but nonetheless important. Getting ample rest and sleep the day before training (or every day, for that matter), is so essential to having a good training session.

Sleep is the body’s time to rest and recover after a long day at work, or a hard day training at the boxing gym. It’s the reset button for both the body and the mind. Lack of sleep will leave you feeling lethargic, whereas being fully rested will ensure you are sharp and focused.

Boxing training requires complete effort from the body and mind, which is why getting enough sleep is crucial to your success.

 

5) Make friends

The friendships made in a boxing gym are special.

It might not seem like the best place to make new friends, but it is. When you join a boxing gym, that means you will be spending a lot of time there. It then becomes obvious that it’s best to get to know the people you’re in there with.

Get familiar with your instructors, your gym mates, the staff, and everyone you will come in contact with. The quicker you make friends in the gym, the faster and easier it is to share progress.

Some of the friendships you build in the boxing gym are for life, and your gym mates become your closest allies.

 

6) Learn how to wrap your own hands

Wrapping your hands is one of the most common activities in boxing training, that you wouldn’t want your coach doing it for you all the time. It’s something you should know by heart.

Wrapping your own hands is very personal. Only you can feel how tight the wrap is around your knuckles, your fist. Only you know how much padding to put, and how the wrap will best fit your hand.

There are many resources online, on YouTube, that will teach you how to wrap your hands in different styles. Choose which one is best for you by experimenting with the different methods. You can practice at home during your free time.

 

7) Focus on fundamentals

Last but not least, focus on learning the fundamentals. Having a good, solid fundamental base will set you up for success down the road.

It’s easy to go into training wanting to learn how to throw advanced combinations, or try your hand at some fancy techniques. But if you’re really serious about training, you’ll know how important the fundamentals are, especially in boxing.

A lot of people forego training the fundamentals, when it’s exactly the fundamentals they should be focusing on. Boxing is a lifelong commitment to training. By getting a good grasp on the basics and learning the fundamentals, you put yourself in a tremendous position to succeed.
