What would you do to achieve your dream? Everyone has that one childhood dream that they’ve always wanted to fulfill. But whether they’re actually able to push through and make it a reality is a totally different story.
By training martial arts such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and boxing at Evolve MMA in Singapore, 21-year-old Pantxika Etchemendy lost 27 kilos and got into the best shape of her life to achieve her dream of becoming a flight attendant.
Pantxika had always dreamt of being a flight attendant. From the time she was a little girl, she saw herself traveling the world through the glamorous life of a cabin crew.
Unfortunately, it felt like her dream would never come true. Being a flight attendant had strict requirements when it came to recruitment – and that meant everything, from her physical appearance to her personality would be under critique. She knew that being overweight would be a major problem and would greatly affect her chances of living her dream.
Always the chubby kid, she blamed genetics and being big boned as reasons why she couldn’t achieve her goal weight.
Pantxika tried many things to lose weight. She tried walking on treadmills for hours, following workouts on Instagram – none of these helped her get to where she wanted to be. Sometimes, she felt as if she didn’t even break a sweat.
Being lazy and unmotivated didn’t help much either. Although she had goals that she wanted to reach, she would procrastinate and not take things seriously. She desperately needed to find an activity that would change the way she looked at exercise.
At her heaviest, Pantxika weighed 90 kilos. Being overweight impacted more than just her physical health. Her self-confidence prevented her from living the life she wanted to. She felt trapped and helpless.
“Shopping for clothes was extremely hard because I couldn’t fit into anything,” Pantxika shared. “I became super uncomfortable in my own skin and really insecure.”
In fact, it even reached a point where she didn’t want to leave her house because she was scared about what people thought of her. After going on Instagram and seeing one of her friends achieve the body she’d always wanted through martial arts classes at Evolve MMA, she knew she had to try it out and sign up for a free trial.

Needless to say, Pantxika enjoyed her complimentary trial. Never in her life had she sweat more than she did in those thirty minutes. It didn’t take long before she signed up and started her martial arts journey to get into the best shape she had ever been in. She tried and loved everything, from Muay Thai to WarriorFit to boxing and even BJJ. For Pantxika, going to classes didn’t feel like a workout because she was enjoying herself! Although she admits that it was a lot of hard work, it was worth it. “It really builds character and made me who I am today,” she said.
“Martial arts gave me a new positive outlook on life,” Pantxika said. “Since joining Evolve and practicing martial arts, I’ve definitely become a more confident person because I know that whatever I do, I know I’m capable of accomplishing anything.”
It also made her more of a go-getter and encouraged her to make the most of her time. “Evolve made me realize that so much can be done in an hour. In that hour I could be crushing a Muay Thai session, learning new techniques in BJJ or really breaking a sweat in WarriorFit.” shared Pantxika.
And the kilos just kept on melting away. To date, Pantxika has lost 27 kilos and has finally achieved the toned physique that she has worked so hard for. It’s also helped her earn her spot in her dream job. But most importantly, it has given her the self-confidence and ability to achieve anything she puts her mind to – and have fun doing it at the same time.
“I feel like Evolve is a place where I can really be myself, where I’m not being judged,” said Pantxika. “The community makes it a fun place to train. Everyone is so warm, friendly and really open to helping one another.”
Pantxika’s World Champion Muay Thai, BJJ, and boxing instructors were also very impressed with her progress and her attitude in class. When asked about her, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Kaoklai Kaennorsing said, “Pantxika loves to train Muay Thai at Evolve. She does a lot of classes. She has lost so much weight.” Another one of her Muay Thai instructors, multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Chaowalit Jocky Gym highlighted her selflessness. He said, “Pantxika is a very good student. She helps out a lot in Muay Thai class.”
Her advice for others who have a dream they’d like to pursue? “ If you put in the hard work and set a goal, you can achieve anything. I’m extremely thankful because now I can finally live my childhood dream of flying and exploring and seeing the world”
Pantxika’s story is one that we can all relate to. No matter who we are, we all have dreams we want to achieve and challenges that stand in the way.
