6 Ways Martial Arts Can Bring Out The Best In You

Over recent years, people have gravitated towards martial arts as a viable option for their health and fitness routine. And why not? It certainly has the power to get people in the best shape of their lives in a rather quick and efficient manner.

But the beauty of martial arts is that it not only enhances your physical well-being, it also improves you overall as a person. Martial arts has a profound effect on our mental and spiritual development. It strengthens our minds, sharpens our focus, and allows us to tune in to our inner being.

During our training in martial arts, we also learn a host of different values that we carry into our personal lives, outside the reaches of the gym, back to our homes and workplaces. These values then become the driving force behind our key decisions. We begin to live by these principles and as a result, our lives are enriched.

Learn the true values of martial arts. Recognize the significance behind your training. It’s not just physical development, but improvement overall. Today, Evolve Daily shares six ways martial arts can bring out the best in you.

1) It Will Teach You the Value of Respect

Here’s how to develop humility and respect.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and Evolve MMA Instructor Leandro Issa explains how martial arts can help you to develop humility and respect.

Respect is one of the first key values you will learn as a martial artist. During our training, we learn to respect ourselves and our opponents alike.

Respect plays a huge role in the philosophy of martial arts. Which is why in disciplines such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, training and matches begin with a bow — a significant sign of respect. In boxing, we are taught to touch gloves with our opponents before trading leather.

Respect is an important part of our development as martial artists, and you can’t really progress far without learning this key value.

2) It Will Show You How to Be Humble

Humility is an important value of martial arts.

Another key value essential to our development as martial artists is humility. Some believe that humility is even more important than confidence. With humility, we have more self-control, understand our limits better, and it helps us be more kind and calm.

Martial arts training introduces us to many of our capabilities, and in turn, we learn what we can and cannot do. One of the first ways we begin to learn humility is by following our seniors and elders. Our trainers in the gym are those who guide our martial arts journey, training us not just in physical techniques, but also in how to get the most out of the knowledge we have been given.

We can never progress in our training without being humble enough to absorb and learn from those who are more experienced than we are. This makes humility an important value to have in order to learn all we can from our training.

3) It Will Give You a Sense of Honor and Integrity

Being honorable is always associated with having a high moral worth or great achievement. In martial arts, we are always taught to honor our trainers, peers, and even our opponents, acknowledging the hard work that goes into training.

Equally as important as honor is integrity, which demands of us truthfulness and honesty. Without integrity, we will be unable to realize our potential and transform into the best versions of ourselves. Doing things with integrity means we are set on a proper course, dealing with adversity the right way.

In martial arts training, there are no shortcuts. Each practitioner must go through the trials and hardships of self-development. Without honor and integrity, we can never truly unleash our human potential.

4) It Will Empower You With Discipline

One value that many people lack today is discipline. In martial arts, discipline plays a key role in our development. Without discipline, our self-improvement is hampered and we cannot move forward in the right capacity.

Discipline isn’t something you learn from a textbook, it’s a philosophy you pick adopt by understanding the value of hard work. In martial arts training, you will be faced with many situations and obstacles which are difficult to overcome.

By having enough discipline, you will understand what it takes to overcome those obstacles, and then do what it takes to achieve victory.

The most successful people in the world exhibit discipline in everything they do. Discipline brings stability and balance to our lives. Without it, the world will be in chaos.

5) It Will Give You Courage

What we often lack is the belief in ourselves and the courage to see things through. Many things in life will scare us. That’s the truth. And while we can never truly rid ourselves of the fear we feel, we can learn to overcome it.

Martial arts forces us to face our fears and conquer adversity. Having courage can come in many different forms. It can mean standing up to a bully or restraining ourselves from using physical force, escaping a fight when it isn’t necessary.

We’ve heard it often, but courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s being brave enough to do what is right, even in the face of fear. What we practice in martial arts gives us the courage to face our fears daily. It empowers us with self-confidence and the belief in our abilities.

6) It Will Teach You to Be Compassionate Towards Others

Martial arts fosters compassion.

Last but certainly not the least, martial arts training teaches us to be compassionate towards others. With martial arts, we are empowered with many different gifts and skills. We then gain an unspoken duty to uphold these blessings with the utmost responsibility.

By understanding our own power, and how it affects others, we gain an understanding of how our actions alter situations around us. In many ways, compassion is in the same boat as empathy. Compassion allows us to take action and help others, and not just feel for them.

With martial arts, we are given the power to do many great things, not the least of which is the knowledge and power of self-defense. With self-defense, we can protect ourselves, as well as the people around us. This even includes our opponents, whom we have a responsibility of subduing with the least amount of force and damage.

So if you’re looking to become the best version of yourself possible, give martial arts a try!
